Target Raising Minimum Hourly Wage

Target Raising Minimum Hourly Wage

By the end of 2020, Target's minimum hourly wage will be $15, company officials said.

Target is giving its workers a raise.

The change, company officials said, will help it recruit and retain staff. Target competitor Walmart, the country's largest retail chain, raised its minimum pay to $10 previous year, with the average pay for an hourly employee reaching $13.38 for full-time workers and $10.58 for part-time workers.

The pay increases will begin in October for 100,000 temporary workers hired ahead of the holidays.

Target has been steadily raising its minimum wage for the past few years.

The size of that investment is known only to Target for the moment, but it comes on top of the $7 billion that the company is already spending to refurbish stores and open new locations in cities and on college campuses.

Target's last major wage increase was in 2016, when it moved to a $10 minimum hourly wage in response to a similar move by rival Wal-Mart Stores Inc. "We thought the timing was right as we move into the holiday season".

Currently, Target employs 323,000 people at more than 1,800 stores. The company also hopes to use a higher minimum wage to "recruit and retain" top-level team members.

"They've got a broad, long-term problem because the labor market is tight and it's going to get tighter", Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics told The Wall Street Journal.

The $11 minimum is equal to the highest state rates from MA and Washington. The urban minimum wage experiments, enacted in Seattle and San Francisco, have strained the local economies as small businesses, particularly restaurants, struggle to adapt. That number gained serious traction during the last presidential campaign, and Democrats recently introduced a $15 minimum wage bill that is backed by Sen.
