Moriya takes slender Evian lead

Moriya takes slender Evian lead

At that point, Ko was at six-under, four shots back of leader Moriya Jutanugarn, but she slowly gained back that ground. Nordqvist eagled the par-5 15th to begin her path to victory.

Ariya Jutanugarn became the first Thai golfer to win a major at last year's Women's British Open, and victory for her older sibling on Sunday would make them the first sisters to be major champions since the formation of the LPGA Tour in 1950.

She claimed her third victory on tour, and first in seven years, at the Thornberry Classic at Wisconsin in July, when she admitted she nearly gave the game in 2015 and 2016 following seasons of struggle.

With seven birdies and a chip-in eagle at the 13th, Park led by two shots from Moriya with Australian Katherine Kirk, Sweden's Anna Nordqvist on 66. After trading in a bogey with a birdie on the front nine, Park went bogey-birdie-double bogey-bogey-bogey over her first five holes on the back nine to fall to two-under for the championship. Ko posted a 69 and had a late birdie-eagle run, but the closing bogey sunk her.

It might have been reduced to just 54 holes but the Evian Championship in Evian les Bains in France turned out to be no less dramatic than would have been the case over 72 holes.

It was at the par three, 16 where Nordqvist was able to break free of the pack and take the outright lead at 10-under par, but a bogey at the last dropped her back and she was left waiting and watching in the clubhouse to see what the outcome would be.

Defying driving rain and hail in a playoff, Anna Nordqvist beat unheralded American Brittany Altomare at the first extra hole to win the Evian Championship on Sunday.

"The play-off hole was so hard and the weather was about the worst I have ever played in".

The former world number one will be a good chance to continue that strong form when she tees up at the New Zealand Women's Open, starting on September 28 at Auckland's Windross Farm Golf Course. Behind her, Altomare sank a short birdie putt at 17 to advance to 9 under.

"These major events, the keys are fairways and greens this week", said Jutanugarn, who has eight top-10 finishes so far in 2017.

Sophia Schubert, the US Women's Amateur champion, made her mark playing alongside the professionals with an impressive opening 68, two better than defending champion Chun In-Gee and seven ahead of world No.1 Ryu So Yeon.

Today she overcame a rocky start to her final round with a blistering stretch of holes from the 6th. I always wanted to make the Solheim Cup and I did that.

American Paula Creamer was forced to withdraw on Friday with a sprained tendon in her left wrist.
