CA Fwd statement on passage of legislative housing "package"

CA Fwd statement on passage of legislative housing

The California Legislature Saturday passed a "sanctuary state" bill to protect immigrants without legal residency in the US, part of a broader push by Democrats to counter expanded deportation orders under the Trump administration.

If passed, it would limit state and local law enforcement agencies from communicating with federal immigration authorities and prevent state and local police departments from questioning people on immigration violations.

The bill also gives protections to inmates who are immigrants, allowing them to reduce their sentences by completing educational or rehabilitation programs, and ensures that schools, hospitals, libraries, and courthouses remain safe spaces for undocumented immigrants.

Police and sheriff's officials, including jail officers, will still be able to work with federal immigration authorities if a person has been convicted of one of some 800 crimes, mostly felonies and misdemeanors that can be charged as felonies.

The legislation, which might never make it into law because it still has to be signed by the governor, is authored by state Sens. For them, the bill delivers a rare victory during Trump's presidency, preserving some protections for people in the country illegally and adding others. "The only thing this bill provides a sanctuary for is unsafe criminals", said Assemblyman James Gallagher, a Republican from Nicolaus. It says voters need the tax return information from candidates because it could point to “potential conflicts of interest, business dealings, financial status, and charitable donations.”. The compromise helped shift the Police Chiefs Association's stance to "neutral".

The changes did not mollify U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Acting Director Thomas Homan, who said the bill will deliberately destruct immigration laws and shelter criminals. Jerry Brown drastically scaled back the version first introduced, the result of negotiations between Brown and De Leon in the final weeks of the legislative session.

The bill's passage comes less than a day after a federal judge in Chicago blocked the Trump administration's attempt to withhold grant money from so-called sanctuary cities.

The bills are nearly identical, both would ban smoking at parks and beaches within the states, but there are a couple differences that make A.B.

A pair of bills seeking to ban smoking at California's parks and beaches are heading to Gov.
