USA citizen fighting for Islamic State surrenders in Syria

An American citizen fighting for the Daesh terrorist group surrendered to Democratic Union Party (PYD) militants in Syria on Thursday, CNN said in a report. The identity of the man is not immediately available.

"The U.S. citizen is being legally detained by Department of Defense personnel as a known enemy combatant", Pentagon spokesman Maj.

In a statement released through CNN, US Marine Corps Major Adrian Rankine-Galloway revealed that the Kurdish troops that are being backed up by the US military surrendered an American citizen who is fighting for the worldwide terrorist group on or before Tuesday, Sept. 12.

The spokesperson for the coalition tweeted on Tuesday that "SDF hold more than 60 percent of Raqqa; 35 blocks cleared of ISIS this week".

Reports that an American is in the custody of the mostly Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces were not disputed by USA officials, but they withheld further comment. Earl Brown, a spokesman for U.S. Central Command, which oversees military operations in the Middle East.

Thousands of foreign fighters from around the globe flocked to Iraq and Syria after Islamic State first captured vast parts of the two countries in 2014 and proclaimed an Islamist caliphate. Their home countries will be contacted for the next steps.

A spokesperson for the US-led coalition fighting ISIS would not confirm that a US citizen was in the custody of the SDF, referring questions to the US State Department.

On Thursday, the chief spokesman for the United States military command referred all questions about the news.

Asked earlier Thursday about the reports of an American captured on the battlefield, a spokesman for the US -led coalition fighting ISIS said it is committed to combatting the group no matter what nationalities its members hold.

One who did, Mohamad Jamal Khweis of Alexandria, Va., was grabbed in western Iraq by Kurdish guerillas in March 2016 and later turned over to USA authorities. He later expressed regret in a television interview.
