US Sanctions 11 People and Companies for Iranian Activities

US Sanctions 11 People and Companies for Iranian Activities

Meanwhile, at a National Security Council meeting Friday, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, national security advisor H.R. McMaster and other senior security officials presented a draft proposal allowing for a more aggressive response to Iranian noncompliance, Reuters reported.

The violation of the landmark 2015 Iran nuclear deal by the United States would be tantamount to breaking global law, a lawmaker said, noting that the European parties to the deal should try to make the U.S. stay committed or they would also sustain damages.

During the presidential campaign, Trump labeled the agreement "the worst deal he'd ever seen". However, it is still unclear whether then United States will extend the deal.

"If the Trump administration kills the deal with Iran, [a deal] that is working and [that] the rest of the worldwide community is highly satisfied with", he says, "it should forget about peacefully settling the nuclear standoff with North Korea".

More than 80 experts on nuclear non-proliferation issues urged the Trump administration Wednesday to not abandon the global agreement reached with Iran to curb Tehran's nuclear weapons development program.

The three former Obama administration officials also said the deal is nearly impossible to renegotiate unless the US could give Iran some new concessions or incentives, an idea Trump seems to oppose.

"If it was up to me, I would have had them noncompliant 180 days ago", Trump told The Wall Street Journal in July.

"Access under the Additional Protocol will be used by the IAEA to verify at undeclared sites that no unapproved nuclear activity is occurring".

"We have to consider the totality of Iran's activities and not let our view be defined exclusively by the nuclear agreement", Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told journalists at a media appearance with British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson in London today. White House and Pentagon officials are deeply concerned about the potential risks of Iranian retaliation against thousands of US troops deployed in Iraq and Syria who are in close proximity to Tehran-backed militia.

According to the Algemeiner, Ali Akbar Velayati, an adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, says the claim by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Yukiya Amano that the IAEA is allowed to access military sites is false. At such a situation Iran's right of protesting or even leaving the nuclear agreement is reserved. They zeroed in on one section - Section T in Annex 1 - that deals with verifying that Iran hasn't acquired "dual use" technology that could serve either a peaceful nuclear objective or weapons development.

The current crisis with North Korea has been discussed often in this context - that tearing up the Iran deal would harm US credibility with North Korea as it tries to negotiate for Pyongyang to denuclearize. "As Secretary Tillerson has just said, the Iranians have got to behave and fulfill their side of the bargain".

New sanctions won't work either, the three said.

"The possibility that US -manufactured aircraft could be used as tools of terror is absolutely unacceptable and should not be condoned by the USA government", they wrote in a letter to Trump.

In a carefully read 20-minute address at the American Enterprise Institute, Haley argued that the nuclear deal can't be considered in isolation.
