Death toll reaches 50 in twin attacks in southern Iraq

Death toll reaches 50 in twin attacks in southern Iraq

Dozens of people are believed to have been killed in twin attacks on a restaurant and a police checkpoint in southern Iraq.

The attack started with militants opening fire at the checkpoint and the restaurant on the main road that links the capital Baghdad with Iraq's southern provinces.

The attackers were disguised in security uniforms and drove stolen army vehicles when they targeted a police checkpoint and two restaurants. One report said at least four Iranians were among those killed.

The Islamic State group was quick to claim responsibility for the attack on its official online Amaq publication.

The remaining attackers then got into a auto and drove to a nearby security checkpoint, where they blew themselves up.

Attackers wearing security force uniforms and driving stolen army vehicles, used auto bombs and suicide vests to cause the explosions.

Officials fear that the final death toll could rise, as many of those injured in the attacks are in serious critical condition.

Iranian nationals are reportedly among the dead as well.
