Local Air National Guard Heads To Florida For Hurricane Rescue

The Coast Guard says Hurricane Irma is still a threat to the state's coastal regions and could cause large surf, potential coastal flooding and tropical storm level winds starting later Sunday until Tuesday.

Waltzer said that while the 253rd did not send anyone to Texas to help with Hurricane Harvey, the unit's members are experienced in handling storms.

In addition, New Jersey National Guard members are being deployed to Florida to help with the storm's impact.

They are expected to travel from MI to SC first and then move to Cecil Field in Jacksonville, Florida. Gen. Don Dunbar, Wisconsin's adjutant general said in the release.

Emergency teams are hoping that won't be needed following Hurricane Irma.

In preparation, Georgia National Guard has moved its C-130s to Memphis, Tennessee, in an effort to protect the aircraft and keep them readily deployable. Twenty-one patients were evacuated, with another 23 planned for evacuation.

Hurricane Irma hit the U.S. Virgin Islands on Wednesday, leaving a path of destruction in its wake.

Soldiers said their focus is on humanitarian efforts, medical evacuations, triage and patient transfers. The Indiana National Guard has an All Hazards Plan that is routinely rehearsed to ensure our response is timely and coordinated with the Incident Command need.

Fifty F-16 Fighting Falcons from the 20th Fighter Wing at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina, and more than 100 personnel will evacuate to Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, The Air Force said. But, many of their fellow soldiers are heading out of town; a call to service they're familiar with.

President Trump's homeland security adviser Tom Bossert said Friday he had spoken to Pentagon and State Department officials and insisted they were prepared to tackle Irma response efforts quickly.

He warned, however, that forecasts for Irma "are not looking particularly good for Florida".
