Sloane Stephens beats Madison Keys to win US Open title

Sloane Stephens beats Madison Keys to win US Open title

Unseeded Sloane Stephens held her nerve to beat Venus Williams in three sets and set up a US Open final against fellow American Madison Keys.

She improved to a flawless 5-0 in career finals.

Yet it was a match that could have gone either way.

With Williams serving and the set tied, 5-5, Stephens stepped up.

"In the end, she ended up winning more points than I did".

Now she should be well known for that ridiculous third set against Williams, where she hit some of the best shots anybody has made this year.

Both athletes brought their own weaknesses and strengths to the match.

"Now, having some good results, it's only as stressful as it needs to be", Stephens, currently ranked No. 83, told The New York Times. Stephens was off for 11 months and when she returned this summer she was ranked No. 957. Her ranking had plummeted to 934th in the world.

Madison Keys faced no such test, overwhelming CoCo Vandeweghe in the other half of the draw to set up the first all-American women's final at Flushing Meadows in NY since 2002.

It has been a long wait but Keys, Stephens and Vandeweghe are now delivering on their promise and on Saturday one of them could grab a first major if seven-time major champion Venus does not add a third US Open title to her collection.

"It still doesn't feel real", Keys said. Venus Williams at 7 p.m. Andy Roddick, at the 2003 US Open, was the last American male to win a Grand Slam.

"If you told me two months ago I'd be holding a finalist trophy at the US Open, I'd be really happy and proud of myself", Keys said after the match. "Just the journey I've been on, I have no words". I know if it was the other way around she would do the same for me. "I just worked my tail off".

Stephens welcomed the biggest victory of her career with a low-key smile, going into the Arthur Ashe Stadium stands to hug her coach, Kamau Murray, before embracing her mother. "Obviously I didn't play my best tennis but Sloane was very supportive".

"I just don't want anyone to ever ask me about the state of American tennis ever again", Stephens said on court after the match.

The American women have been the talk of the town this week.
