The assailants fled on a motorcycle after spraying bullets at Gauri Lankesh on Tuesday night as she was leaving her auto outside her home in the Karnataka state capital. Gauri Lankesh has been known for her strict and gutsy stories and she was a huge supported for Hindu acts.

"One mob has been created which can kill people alone or in presence of thousands of people", he said, adding that these mob members are not afraid of killing anyone. "This killing, fits into a by now familiar pattern of eliminating voices that dare to speak out against the current climate of hate and intolerance by the RSS/BJP", the CPI (M) said in a statement.

A senior Indian journalist and an outspoken activist was shot dead outside her residence in southwestern state of Karnataka, police said Wednesday.

"The alacrity w which protests were organised in #Bengaluru after #GauriLankesh murder makes one wonder, were sm ppl anticipating her death?" tweeted Shefali.

'The Karnataka Government should maintain law and order in their state and the Congress Government must investigate this matter and book the culprits soon, ' said Gadkari. "The entire country is with her. Truth can not be suppressed", said Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi. Condolences to the family.

The police say that few unidentified assailants, on a motorcycle, fired shots and rode away.
