NASA sees Tropical Storm Katia develop near Mexico's east coast

Katia was moving slowly toward the east-southeast near 5 miles per hour (7 kph), and little motion is expected during the next day or so.

As Hurricane Irma tore through the Caribbean, a tropical storm in the Atlantic and another in the Gulf of Mexico were upgraded to hurricane status on Wednesday (Sept 6), the National Hurricane Cenre said. This storm is likely to become a hurricane by the end of the week when it will probably threaten northern Mexico.

-Tropical Storm Katia has formed in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. A hurricane watch has been issued for the Mexican state of Veracruz by the Mexican government.

"The system will likely end up moving inland over the northern coast of southeastern Mexico sometime late this week or this weekend", AccuWeather Hurricane Expert Dan Kottlowski said.

The storm is expected to bring a maximum 15 inches of rain to Veracruz.

Tropical Storm Jose was moving west and was about 1,135 miles east of the Lesser Antilles.

The depression is forecast to strengthen into a tropical storm within the next day or so, and it will receive the name Katia.

Meanwhile, forecasters are also watching Irma as it heads through the Caribbean on its way toward the southern tip of Florida and Jose, which is still in the Atlantic Ocean about 1,000 miles west of the Caribbean.
