Why Alphons Kannanthanam is known as 'Demolition Man'

Why Alphons Kannanthanam is known as 'Demolition Man'

"After reaching Delhi, I came to know that the Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) had chose to give me this opportunity", Alphons told IANS.

As BJP national president Amit Shah continues with his nationwide tour with the intent of expanding the BJP footprint across India in the run up to the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, could be BJP be opening up to a dilution of its well-known stand against consumption of beef? "I didn't hear anyone say anything in that regard, other than Kannanthanam who must be happy for himself", he said, while speaking to media. Kannanthanam also addressed some of the concerns that were raised by the Christian community about the BJP in the past and said it was mere propaganda.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi is taking everybody along".

Nearly half a dozen Union Ministers were asked to quit to make headroom for a massive reshuffle of the Council of Ministers during a meeting with BJP chief Amit Shah on Thursday. Induction of Kannanthanam, who is a practicing advocate, into the NDA cabinet is widely seen as a move of the BJP to make inroads in the Christian belt in the state.

"He is like a flower that Modi has picked from a bouquet".

Alphons Kannanthanam started his political career as independent MLA with Left support.

He retired from the IAS and was elected as an Independent member of the Kerala Assembly from Kanjirappally from 2006 to 2011.

There are speculations that the BJP is aiming to bring Catholic Church closer to NDA alliance by selecting Kannanthanam, who is not representing either Houses of Parliament at present. "As Goa chief minister, Manohar Parrikar has said that beef will be consumed in the state". He shot into fame when he was the commissioner of the Delhi Development Authority during 1990s and his anti-encroachment drive against thousands of illegal constructions gave him the name "demolition man".

Kannanthanam earned a reputation for being an earnest civil servant after making Kottayam the first fully literate town in the country as part of the literacy campaign launched by the communist state government in 1989.
