Huawei unveils first mobile AI computing platform

Chinese phone and chip designer Huawei unveiled its first artificial intelligence (AI) smartphone chipset, the Kirin 970. Chief Executive of Huawei, Richard Yu revealed an upcoming new chip for their smartphones that, the company claims, will outrun the processors used in Apple's and Samsung's now used phones across the globe. And on-device AI can now partner with cloud-based AI - where your mobile device communicates with powerful cloud-based AI processors to give you more oomph for data interpretation and execution.

Huawei said it sees on-device AI and cloud AI complementing one another and spurring the development of new capabilities.

Announced at IFA 2017, Huawei's next handset will include the company's Kirin 970 chipset, boasting baked-in AI that will lead to "truly personalised" experiences for users, the company claims.

Huawei's chief executive of consumer business, Richard Yu revealed a new mobile chip that retains the speed and power to house AI, while consuming less power. The chipset is powered by an 8-core CPU, a new generation 12-core GPU and is built on 10nm process.

It is noted that Kirin 970 - the world's first chipset with neural processor NPU (Neural Processing Unit).

This isn't the first time that Mr Yu has claimed that the next Huawei device will outperform the next iPhone. In a benchmark image recognition test, the Kirin 970 processed 2,000 images per minute, Huawei also said.

Getting away from this AI tech focus, the Kirin 970 delivers other enhancements compared to its predecessors and competitors.

Under the company's "+Intelligence" strategy, discussed in its annual report past year, Huawei plans to build AI into all its devices, networks and industries.

As smartphones and other electronic devices make greater use of AI, the digital assistants are likely to become more intuitive and play a bigger role in people's lives, observers say.

Putting it in simple words, with this new chipset AI tasks would require lesser time and power.

Yu confirmed that the Mate 10 will be unveiled on October 16 in Munich, and while the executive did not provide any previews of the smartphone, he teased that the front of the device will be completely bezel-less.
