LPGA Cambia Portland Classic golf tournament

LPGA Cambia Portland Classic golf tournament

The LPGA tournament victory snaps a three-year drought for Lewis, who hasn't claimed a LPGA tournament victory since 2014.

Lewis, who has lived in the Houston area since age 11 and now lives in the city that she refers to as her "hometown", could not help but be affected by the havoc Hurricane Harvey has unleashed on Houston.

Stacy Lewis completed one of the most emotional victories in recent memory on the LPGA Tour when she held off a charging In Gee Chun to win the Cambia Portland Classic at the Columbia Edgewater Country Club in Portland, Oregon. "Now I'm in a good spot to do that".

Lewis owned a four-shot cushion at the turn, but a Chun birdie on 12 sliced her lead to two and another birdie at 16 made it a razor-thin, one-shot edge. She won her 12th LPGA title for those suffering from the epic rainfall and deadly flooding that destroyed so many homes and businesses in Houston.

Perhaps the biggest hole of the day for Lewis came at the hard 17th when she hit her approach over the green and saved par after chipping 7 feet past the hole.

'I was hitting a lot of good shots, hitting a lot of good putts, and they just weren't going in. "You can't just get up there and bomb it", Lewis said. Lewis' husband, Gerrod Chadwell, is the head women's golf coach at the University of Houston.

Lewis was making her 83rd start since her last victory.

Tied for the second-round lead with two-time defending champion Brooke Henderson and In Gee Chun, Lewis had eight birdies - five on the front nine - in a 7-under 65 at tree-lined Columbia Edgewater.

Annoucing her pledge "probably made things harder, because there were more people following me, more phone messages and more social media. I was able to go 4-under par at that point and that was really important and helped me get to 10-under par today".

Lewis also called on her fellow LPGA Tour pros to grab an extra pair of shoes when they next go shopping and she would hand them over to those in need. "I played well all week", she said.

Lewis' bid to finish high up the pecking order is on track so far after an eight under round of 64 saw her occupy the joint top position on the leaderboard at the halfway stage.

"Felt like any hole I could make birdie on".

Lewis' family moved to suburban Houston when she was 11 years old. "It's nice to see yourself do that again".
