Mueller Has 'Problematic' Original Draft of Comey Firing Letter

Mueller Has 'Problematic' Original Draft of Comey Firing Letter

After Comey's shocking ouster earlier this year, DOJ Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed former FBI boss Robert Mueller as the special counsel to oversee the FBI's Russian Federation investigation.

Now, the New York Timesand Wall Street Journal report that Special Counsel Robert Mueller has obtained a letter Trump drafted to Comey in which he revealed the real reason for the firing: Trump was angry that Comey wouldn't publicly confirm that the president wasn't being investigated in the ongoing Russian electoral-interference probe.

Trump drafted the letter with senior policy adviser Stephen Miller on an early-May weekend visit to his golf club in Bedminster, N.J., and then shared it with senior aides during an Oval Office meeting the day before the firing, according to people familiar with the discussions. Lindsey Graham of SC wrote to current FBI Director Christopher Wray asking for additional documents related to Mr. Comey's decision to exonerate Hillary Clinton in 2016. At the time, CNN reported that a former White House aide called Schiller, who became Trump's head of security in 2005, the "most underestimated person on Trump's team". He asked Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to leave the room before making the request.

After Comey was sacked in May, Trump has said he was thinking of "this Russia thing" when he chose to fire Comey, who had been leading the bureau's investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

The letter could provide Mueller's team with insight into Trump's thinking as he prepared to oust the Federal Bureau of Investigation director.

The White House provided conflicting explanations about why Trump fired Comey.

The newspaper, which said it had not seen the actual letter, reported that Mr McGahn "believed that some of its contents were problematic", which partly lead to its redrafting, effectively blocking it from being released to the public.

"What we know, at a minimum, is that McGahn was concerned about the contents of the letter and warned Trump about them", Mariotti said.

That was in the earlier letter and was part of the president's rationale for firing Comey. Mr Trump's lawyers have also refused to discuss the issue.

Barbara McQuade, former US attorney, talks with Joy-Ann Reid about the strength of the obstruction of justice case against Donald Trump and why it's about more than the firing of James Comey.

"Regardless of recommendation, I was going to fire Comey", he said, adding "there was no good time to do it".
