United Nations chief urges restraint by Myanmar forces in Rakhine

United Nations chief urges restraint by Myanmar forces in Rakhine

Tension has always been high between the Rohingya Muslims and Rakhine Buddhists, leading to bloody rioting in 2012.

Guterres said that it was the government's responsibility to provide security and allow aid agencies to reach those in need. The Rohingya people, who have been condemned to statelessness, now have nowhere to take refuge as the military mounts a relentless attack against them. They have faced decades of persecution in Buddhist-majority Myanmar, where they are not considered citizens.

"Though India has not ratified the UNCHR Convention on Refugees, India has ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination".

He said that Muslim world is saddened while marking Eid al-Adha because of violence in Myanmar, conflicts in Syria and Iraq, and fight against terrorism in Turkey.

Just recently, the MEA had said, "India is seriously concerned by reports of renewed violence and attacks by terrorists in northern Rakhine State Myanmar".

All that were part of the Muslim national minority Rohingya.

In a statement from his spokesperson, the Secretary-General expressed deep concern about reported violence since 25 August attacks on police posts.

Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said in Parliament on August 9 that according to available data, more than 14,000 Rohingyas, registered with the UNHCR, have been staying in India.

"At the same time as Aung San Suu Kyi was talking about implementing the recommendations, her office and government were doing the opposite of what the report recommended, using social media and state media to whip up fears and tensions against Rohingya". More than 400 Hindus from Rakhine have also crossed into Bangladesh, a community leader there told AFP, after armed men attacked their village, killing and looting.

Between 300,000 and 500,000 Rohingyas live in Bangladesh but only about 32,000 of them have refugee status and live in camps in the Cox's Bazar district.

Around 38,000 Rohingya have crossed into Bangladesh from Myanmar since Friday, U.N. sources said.

The outbreak of violence against Rohingyas especially in June-October 2012, led to hundreds of cases of injury, death, destruction of property and displacement of 1,40,000 people and around 1,20,000 individuals remain in internally displaced camps in central Rakhine State.

The group posts images online of its fighters wielding heavy weapons, but Myanmar accuses them of cruder warfare.

It is almost impossible to verify information issued by either the government or Rohingya sympathizers because the government has barred most journalists from the area, except on limited official guided tours.

Myanmar s Information Committee appeared earlier this week to confirm a major security operation took place around the village on Sunday afternoon as a patrol clashed with scores of Rohingya militants.
