Election annulment 'momentous development' for rule of law

Election annulment 'momentous development' for rule of law

Kenyatta is addressing the nation after Friday morning's ruling that also called for a new election within 60 days.

David Chadwick, partner at legal services provider Mayer Brown, says the news highlights the political risks for companies investing in Africa. "Kenya is a very, very important country for the continent".

"The court has made its decision".

A row over the 2007 poll, which Odinga challenged after being declared loser, was followed by weeks of ethnic bloodshed that killed more than 1200 people.

Bosire said that IEBC has been conducting shoddy presidential elections for long that has led to poor leadership adding that Kenya should be among the Countries in the World to embrace democracy.

The government expects growth to slow to 5.5 percent this year, from 5.8 percent in 2016.

Raila Odinga, the leader of the opposition party National Super Alliance (NASA), had alleged widespread fraud in the August 8 vote, including the hacking of the electoral commission's computer system.

Worldwide observers had said they saw no sign of manipulation of voting and tallying at polling stations. The commission chairman is urging the court to quickly release its full ruling with the details. "I am very sure that when that day comes, we will [defeat] the opposition", said Mr Mutembei.

Kenya's stock exchange halted trading briefly midway through Friday's session after blue chip shares plummeted following the Supreme Court's decision to annul the result of the August 8 presidential election.

President Kenyatta said he would respect the court's decision but also branded the judges "crooks". The decision was backed by four out of six Supreme Court judges.

Meanwhile, Odinga hailed the judgment as historic.

Mutiga added however that "restraint will be hard in this very polarised environment" - which was also stark before, during and after the August vote due to deep ethnic, economic and political divisions in Kenya. At the time of the August 8 vote, worldwide election observers said that they encountered little interference with the vote.

According to the results announced by the electoral commission before they were nullified, Kenyatta had been declared the victor with 54 percent of the votes.

Kenya has seen widespread unrest since the election, and human rights groups said at least 24 people had died at the hands of police since the vote, ITV News reported.

We wait for the election date to be announced, and the next court case to be highly watched will the case against the IEBC officials involved in the vote tampering.

There were "little aberrations here and there", Kerry said in an interview last month with CNN, but Kenya "put together a process that will allow each and every vote's integrity to be proven".
