Trump urges GCC to find diplomatic solution to crisis

Trump urges GCC to find diplomatic solution to crisis

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has expressed Moscow's support for Kuwait's mediation efforts to defuse the three-month diplomatic crisis among Gulf states, Qatar's state news agency (QNA) reported Thursday.

The two leaders also reportedly discussed Iran.

In Doha, Lavrov and Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani mulled the developments of the current Gulf crisis.

However, Saudi King Salman in mid-August ordered the opening of the land border to Qatari pilgrims and authorised sending Saudi aircraft to ferry pilgrims from Doha after the intercession of a member of Qatar's royal family. It is Russia's interest, noted the visitor, that the Gulf Cooperation Council be united and strong.

Lavrov, who also met the Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani Wednesday, said his trip was aimed at enhancing the economic and political ties between the two countries.

The White House says Trump discussed the issue Wednesday in a telephone conversation with Saudi Arabia's King Salman.

Oil rich Qatar has sought legal redress owing to the ongoing blockade with plans to demand for compensation for losses incurred by the crisis championed by four Arab countries led by Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Trump told King Salman that a diplomatic resolution would fulfill a commitment - made when Trump visited Riyadh - to maintain unity while fighting "terrorism".

"Over the longer term, the diplomatic rift could weaken confidence and reduce investment and growth, both in Qatar and possibly in other GCC countries as well", the statement said.

Doha denies the claims and accuses the other countries of an attack on its sovereignty.
