Here's What to Know If DACA Ends

Here's What to Know If DACA Ends

The report examines the potential economic consequences of cancelling the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program, or DACA.

As The Hill notes, DACA granted work permits and deferred deportation for almost 800,000 undocumented people who arrived in the United States as children.

Many DACA recipients fear the worst, however, and they've increasingly reached out to Colorado immigration attorneys - driven by both the September 5 deadline and an increase in immigration arrests under the Trump administration. Repeal is not, however, a solution for the country or for the young people directly involved.

Such a bill cleared the House in 2010 but fell victim to a GOP-led filibuster in the Senate.

Ending DACA and removing hundreds of thousands of young men and women from our workforce also would cost the country an estimated $460.3 billion in lost Gross Domestic Product over a decade and tens of billions more in lost contributions to Medicare and Social Security, and force businesses to incur $3.4 billion in turnover costs. It helps them avoid deportation and get work permits. Most medium to large companies note the date of that authorization, and they have systems in place to alert them when the authorization is due to expire. Thousands of such immigrants live or study in MA.

"This is earth shattering for so many affected by it", she said after hearing the report.

For many DACA recipients there is more at stake than a college degree or dream job: they are also parents to children born in America. Sadly, despite constant promises and reassurances that "they shouldn't worry" from Trump and his administration during the election, each of these 800,000 children are likely about to be stabbed in the back and face deportation. As Congress and the Trump administration consider whether to extend or cancel the program, those children are often overlooked, though their well-being hangs in the balance.

Because of the public nature of his advocacy work, Escalante says he fears that the Trump administration could retaliate against him. Standing beside Menendez was Erika Martinez, 17, of Elizabeth, who was brought to the United States from El Salvador when she was 2 years old.

According to its website, "FWD.us is mobilizing the tech community to promote policies that keep the USA competitive in a global economy, starting with fixing our broken immigration system and criminal justice reform".

- It means that, as the people in DACA get older, they can enroll in college, obtain legal jobs, get a driver's licence, travel overseas, etc, without worrying about United States immigration officials.

While there are some Republicans that support protection for Dreamers, it's still a major political obstacle that could make life tough for Ryan and McConnell, who would have to weigh calling the fix as a stand-alone or attaching it to a must-pass spending deal.

In a conference call with reporters on Tuesday for the US Conference of Mayors, Republican mayors from Anaheim, California, and Mesa, Arizona, both talked about the importance of DACA, and the danger for Republican politicians in areas like theirs if it were rescinded.
