U.S. conducts missile test off Kauai amid growing tensions with N. Korea

U.S. conducts missile test off Kauai amid growing tensions with N. Korea

The vessel detected and tracked the target missile launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai, Hawaii with its onboard AN/SPY-1 radar, the statement read.

Mike Campisi, Raytheon's SM-6 senior program director, said the company developed the anti-ballistic missile capability in just seven months after it was requested earlier this year.

Sailors on the USS John Paul Jones, a guided-missile destroyer based in Hawaii, conducted the test.

The test comes amid North Korea's ballistic missile tests and rising tensions between the U.S and the North.

"North Korea's reckless violation of its neighbours' territorial sovereignty and its direct threat to Japan's citizens have threatened both regional and worldwide peace and security", she said.

SM-6 interceptors fired from the destroyer USS John Paul Jones brought down a medium-range ballistic missile target, the MDA said in a statement.

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland says North Korea's latest provocative missile test is a reckless violation of Japan's sovereignty. That was the 15th intercept in 15 tests for the THAAD system, according to the MDA.

By firing a long-range missile over Japan that landed in the northern Pacific Ocean, North Korea is showing a total disregard for its worldwide obligations, she said in a statement Tuesday. Washington and its allies called an emergency U.N. Security Council meeting for later Tuesday, but looked short on new ideas for stopping the nuclear and missile advances that are increasingly putting the USA mainland within range.

The U.S. military still has numerous missile defense assets - from Patriot interceptors to Terminal High Altitude Area Defense systems - in the area though.

In that test, the interceptor collided with the ICBM-class target over the Pacific Ocean a little more than one hour after it was launched.
