Second confirmed human case of West Nile virus in the area

Groton - Health officials said Wednesday that mosquitoes trapped in Groton have tested positive for West Nile virus, which they said is typical during summer months but should remind area residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites.

"Because mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water, public health asks property owners to remove standing water anywhere it tends to collect", stated a WDGPH press release. "The West Nile virus seems to be here to stay, so the best way to avoid the disease is to reduce exposure and eliminate breeding grounds for mosquitoes". Are there infected mosquitos flying around?

The virus causes flu-like symptoms in humans, but in rare cases, inflammation of the brain and spinal column can cause permanent disability or death.

"The positive bird means that residents of Buffalo County need to be more cautious to prevent mosquito bites", April Loeffler, Health Officer said.

To protect yourself from West Nile virus, officials recommend wearing light-coloured trousers and a long-sleeved shirt when outside.

In most cases people won't become sick.

Health officials say the infection rate is moderate this year.

There have been 24 reported human cases of West Nile Virus that were either confirmed or probable, according to Public Health Ontario's website.
