Germany's Angela Merkel: 'Refugees must be distributed fairly'

Germany's Angela Merkel: 'Refugees must be distributed fairly'

"We will have to wait and see how the situation develops", said Merkel.

Asked about the European Commission's plan announced in May not to continue the controls beyond November, Merkel said she would call for their extension during talks with its chief Jean-Claude Juncker on Wednesday.

Seeking a fourth term, Merkel has had to contend with loud and sustained heckling on her campaign trail from demonstrators strongly opposed to her refugee policies, reported Reuters.

She did not speak out on migrants or Turkey, but she said, also on Sunday in an interview with Die Welt, a German newspaper, that she did not regret opening Germany's doors to refugees at the height of the migration crisis. That compares with a 39-38 percent edge for Merkel in January, when Schulz's emergence as her main challenger gave the SPD a temporary poll boost.

"I am convinced of this, and at the same time I say that the year 2015 should not be repeated, it was an emergency situation that we should never experience again, even the refugees".

Merkel has in the past faced criticism from some who say her administration has done too much to open the country's borders to refugees from Syria and elsewhere.

The Chancellor was speaking a month ahead of the German federal election, which will take place on 24 September. Alternative for Germany (AfD), the only party challenging Merkel's disastrous European Union and Migrant Policies, is pegged below 10-percent in most opinion polls.

The other minor league parties - the Greens, the far-left Die Linke, and the pro-business FDP - who are more refugee-friendly than Merkel, also had nearly 10 percent each.

Merkel sharply condemned a remark by a top AfD leader that her government's integration commissioner could be "disposed of in Anatolia", a name for the eastern part of Turkey. "Politicians need to set the framework based on realistic goals - then, competition will lead to the best solutions".

"Either we [in Europe] show solidarity with countries like Italy and Greece or this will have grave impact in the future", she said.

"It's important that we don't go out of our way to avoid certain areas only because there are a bunch of people screaming".
