United States military confirms it backed Somalia raid

The Somali army initially said no civilians were killed and all the dead were members of the al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabab militia, which is fighting to overthrow the UN-backed government and impose strict Islamic law.

Al-Shabab, which has become the deadliest armed group in Africa, continues to hold vast areas of rural Somalia after being chased out of major cities in recent years by the multinational African Union force and Somali troops.

The Somali government has confirmed that a joint US and Somali National Army (SNA) security ground operation occurred in the early morning hours of August 25th.

The participation of U.S. soldiers in the raid was confirmed by the U.S. Africa Command, which said it was "conducting an assessment into the situation to determine the facts on the ground". Bodies of civilians, especially those killed in misdirected attacks, are often taken from remote areas to Mogadishu to draw media attention.

But the Ministry of information retracted earlier statement confirming the existence of civilian casualties and said that it will investigate the matter.

The farmers in Bariire in Lower Shabelle, about 50 miles from Mogadishu were killed "one by one by one mercilessly", the regional Deputy Governor Ali Nur Mohamed told reporters according to Al Jazeera.

A Somalia official says a raid by foreign and Somali forces on a farm has killed 10 civilians, including a child.

He says a child and a woman are among the dead.

It is not clear which foreign forces are blamed for the attack.

The U.S. Africa Command did not immediately respond to questions. The Somali National Army released a statement saying that the attack was part of a raid against a "farm in Bariire with known al-Shabaab presence" carried out with "international partners".

"The Somali National Army, under the direction of Chief of Defense Forces General Ahmed Mohamed Jimaale, and our global partners conducted a security operation early on August 25 near Bariire, Lower Shabelle that resulted in the deaths of eight al-Shabaab terrorists".

Somali officials have displayed the victims' bloodied bodies in the capital, Mogadishu.
