Donald Trump slammed for pardoning controversial former sheriff Joe Arpaio

Donald Trump slammed for pardoning controversial former sheriff Joe Arpaio

Trump granted the pardon less than a month after a judge found Arpaio - the sheriff of Arizona's Maricopa County until losing re-election a year ago - guilty of a misdemeanor contempt-of-court charge in a trial that was prosecuted by the president's own Justice Department.

"Trump: There's a hurricane, it's Friday night, people are exhausted, flawless time for me to pardon Fmr Sheriff Joe Arpaio", Scott Dworkin wrote.

And he noted that Arpaio "was found guilty of criminal contempt" for illegally profiling Latinos living in Arizona "based on their perceived immigration status in violation of a judge's orders".

"So was Sheriff Joe convicted for doing his job?" the president said, gauging his audience's support for a pardon.

In a statement Friday evening, the White House said Arpaio's "life and career" exemplified "selfless public service".

Another Republican, Rep. Justin Amash of MI, said the president pardoned someone who violated people's constitutional rights.

Flake's primary rival, Kelli Ward, by contrast backed the decision: "We applaud the President for exercising his pardon authority to counter the assault on Sheriff Joe's heroic efforts to enforce the nation's immigration laws".

"For 24 years, Sheriff Joe Arpaio ruled Maricopa County with an iron fist". The judge convicted him.

A Phoenix weekly is taking the opportunity to remind people exactly who President Donald Trump just pardoned.

"Pardon of Arpaio is explicit embrace of the racist policing practices that leave communities fearful of very ppl who should protect & serve", the organization tweeted.

Trump's pardon comes before that legal process against Arpaio had finished: His sentencing hearing was scheduled for October, where he faced a maximum of six months behind bars.

Arpaio, convicted of criminal contempt of court for violating a federal court order to stop profiling Latinos in Arizona, was controversial enough, but the White House announcement drew bipartisan criticism.

Governor Doug Ducey released a statement supporting the President's decision.

Donald Trump at the Phoenix Convention Center on August 22.

Perez was assistant USA attorney general for civil rights when he handled the Justice Department's 2012 lawsuit against Arpaio for racially profiling Latino residents in the Phoenix area.

"President Trump's pardon of Joe Arpaio is a direct attack on the court's ability to compel powerful people to follow the rule of law - and amounts to a shameful endorsement of racial profiling that undermines the rights and security of all Americans".

Arpaio earned a national profile by acting aggressively to arrest immigrants in the USA illegally, including tactics that Latino and immigrants' rights advocates said were akin to racial profiling.

He also said he's not ruling out a return to the political arena. That circumvented the traditional political process for issuing pardons.
