For 'Last Jedi' promotion, an augmented reality character hunt

The Force is strong with a new Star Wars augmented reality game.

Dubbed Find the Force, the AR hunt is technically a part of the official Star Wars App, but by finding and scanning Find the Force logo graphics at one of 20,000 locations across 30 countries, fans can partake in "AR character experiences".

Continue below to get all the details, including info on a related sweepstakes, and to watch a video. Wannabe Jedis can track down and take cell phone pics and videos with everyone from Admiral Ackbar to even a new character from The Last Jedi, those questionably adorable (Ewok-inspired?) Porgs.

Disney and Lucasfilm are launching Find the Force, a new augmented reality event that will let fans search for Star Wars characters using their smartphones and the Star Wars app during the massive product launch tied to The Last Jedi. Aside from being the launch date for the first wave of new merch from the upcoming Episode VIII, Sept. 1, a.k.a. Each day during the weekend will have 5 holograms, so there will be a total of 15 different holograms that fans could unlock.

"When you scan the graphic using the Star Wars app, you'll reveal a character, who through AR, will appear in the room with you", the companies wrote in a blog post.

"The Last Jedi", the eighth movie in the "Star Wars" film saga, arrives in theaters in December.

"We are excited that augmented reality will allow fans to experience the universe in a whole new way", Kathleen Kennedy, president of Disney-owned Lucasfilm, said in a statement Thursday.

"Star Wars", one of Disney's most important franchises, was the USA toy industry's top-selling property for 2015 and 2016, with $1.5 billion in sales over the two years, according to research firm NPD.
