Doug Marrone opens Jags' QB race between Blake Bortles, Chad Henne

Doug Marrone opens Jags' QB race between Blake Bortles, Chad Henne

The Jacksonville Jaguars may very well be in the process of benching struggling quarterback Blake Bortles. He was a second-round pick by Miami in 2008 and started 31 games for the Dolphins from 2008-11 before signing a free-agent contract with the Jaguars in 2012. Marrone made a decision to have the two compete for the starting job after another lackluster performance by Bortles in last week's loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That amount is guaranteed for injury only, meaning that if Bortles were to suffer an injury that made him unable to pass a physical next year, the Jaguars would have to pay him that amount even if he can not play.

Marrone said Bortles and Henne split starter repetitions Saturday.

For a team that has a ton of young talent and has great weapons, the offensive has been held back by a guy who owns a completion rating of 58.8, averages 17 interceptions a year, and has only thrown 69 touchdowns.

Henne doesn't offer much in the form of a solution.

Bortles' struggles from last season have continued into the preseason, forcing the Jaguars to bench the No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft in favor of Chad Henne for Thursday's preseason game against the Panthers, the team announced Wednesday.

The team said Bortles will also receive snaps with the first team. While Henne might not be the most effective option under center instead of Bortles, this move really speaks volumes of where the team is at with their quarterback situation at the moment.

National Football League rumors are looking up for Colin Kaepernick, with the prodigal quarterback possibly having an opening to return to the National Football League and compete for a starting job in Jacksonville. And I don't know where his mind-set is right now or where his agent's mind-set is, but you definitely kick the tires on it, for sure. "I don't think it's so much of a physical thing, the mechanics". And considering the state of the position in Jacksonville, now could be the most opportune time. But in the end, none of these quarterbacks are likely the answer, to the disheartenment of Jaguars fans everywhere. Some real competition at quarterback should've been brought in by now, as the staff and coaches should have been aware during training camp that the answer to their problems wasn't on the roster. Although its late in the offseason now, it's still never too late to make a necessary change to save a season.

The Jaguars may be entering the Colin Kaepernick watch. Some backup quarterbacks have been waiting for their chance to compete for a starting job. What to expect? Will the timing with his receivers be there?
