Verizon launches cheaper unlimited plan to compete with rivals

Verizon launches cheaper unlimited plan to compete with rivals

That means you'll still be tapped out at 720p video quality on smartphone and 15GB of 4G LTE mobile hotspot data.

We're doing this to ensure all customers have a great experience on our network since there is no visible difference in quality on a smartphone or tablet when video is shown at higher resolutions than 720p on phones and 1080p on tablets.

It's upsetting that Verizon has decided to make this move. Customers that are now signed up for a plan can keep it, but even for them some conditions will change. Sprint has a $50 promotional plan that includes HD video streaming, but prices go up to $60 after a year.

Verizon's new "Go Unlimited" plan will cost $75 monthly for a single line, down $5, with video streaming slowed to DVD quality. To offset the change, the company added an additional 5 GB mobile hot spot data (now it's 10 GB total) at no additional charge.

Verizon Communications Inc said on Tuesday that it was introducing a cheaper unlimited mobile data plan with some limits as it tries to lure customers away from rival wireless carriers.

The other carriers followed Verizons lead and essentially ended overage chages for data and drove down the price for cellular service. "RootMetrics confirmed it again last month". Subscribers of this plan get free calling, texting, and data in Mexico and Canada. Verizon was testing throttling on Netflix and YouTube earlier this year, and third-party researchers have determined that unlimited plans were slowing down networks. For example, T-Mobile throttled video for some customers.

The basic plan gives you unlimited hotspot access, but only at a pokey 600Kbps. On the contrary, for the smartphone users, the maximum video quality will be of 720p on your device.

As reported by The Verge, Ars Technica, and CNET, the shift comes as Verizon splits the single consumer postpaid unlimited option it began offering in February into two new buckets - neither of which offer 1080p on smartphones. We had viewed the original Unlimited plan as more of a churn reduction / customer retention tool.

These changes could help alleviate network congestion, but also sets up a new scheme by which Verizon can drive higher ARPU through tiered levels of wireless pricing.

It's technically unlimited service, but it sure won't feel like that in practice.

But customers who opt for the cheapest option may be disappointed with the video quality.

The FCC allowed similar video throttling systems to continue even under former Chairman Tom Wheeler, who instituted the net neutrality rules in 2015. However, the agency's current chair has announced plans to roll back net neutrality protections.
