Malaysia helps search for missing USA crew

Malaysia helps search for missing USA crew

Ten sailors are missing and five others were injured after the guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain collided with the merchant vessel Alnic MC east of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore today, us 7th Fleet officials said.

The 505-foot USA guided-missile destroyer and the Alnic MC Liberian-flagged oil and chemical tanker collided east of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore.

Ahmad Kamarulzaman said KD Handalan received an emergency call from the United States destroyer USS John McCain early yesterday on the accident.

There were no initial reports of injuries.

The crash could have caused an environmental disaster as a crew member on the Alnic MC told Reuters that the Liberian-flagged, 183-meter-long tanker was carrying 12,000 tonnes of oil when the collision took place.

The previous incident on June 17 involved USS Fitzgerald that collided with a Japanese merchant ship at the Japanese offshore killing seven U.S. sailors.

In June, another USA ship, the Fitzgerald, ran into another ship near Japan.

The warship had been heading for a routine stop in Singapore after a so-called "freedom of navigation operation" in the South China Sea, sparking a furious response from China.

The navy also said efforts were continuing to control the damage and the extent was still being determined.

The search for the missing sailors is centred on an area east of the Straits of Malacca, near the Singaporean island of Pedra Branca. The latest US Navy update has the ship sailing under her own power toward port. Ten sailors are missing, and five were injured.

Republican Senator John McCain, whose father and grandfather were the veteran Navy Admirals who lent their names to the ship, also wrote a message on Twitter.

Early Tuesday morning, the commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet said some remains of Navy sailors were found in a compartment of the warship.
