Diplomatic immunity: How it could be granted to Grace Mugabe

Diplomatic immunity: How it could be granted to Grace Mugabe

We welcome this courageous move by the South African government in the face of the onslaught by white monopoly capital and agents of white supremacy such as Afriforum who want to take advantage of the incident (s) that involve the First Lady.

A Zimbabwean flight was also prohibited from leaving OR Tambo International on Friday night.

These included the imperative to maintain good inter-governmental relations within the SADC region, and in particular, between South Africa and Zimbabwe.

South Africa's Foreign Ministry said later on Sunday in a statement that it had granted Grace Mugabe immunity, although it acknowledged that the decision "was not an easy one to make" and came after "careful consideration of all the relevant factors".

Mugabe's two 20-something sons, Robert Jr. and Chatunga, had been in another room nearby, Engels told TimesLIVE.

There was no sign of Grace Mugabe at a regional summit that Zimbabwe's 93-year-old president attended Saturday in South Africa's capital, Pretoria.

Just days before, South African police had issued a "red alert" along the country's borders to ensure that Mugabe would not flee undetected.

"The family is living in fear for what might happen", AfriForum CEO Kallie Kriel said.

Grace flew out of South Africa in the early hours of Sunday despite being sought by police for the assault on Enlgels, which left the young model with cuts on her forehead and on her head that required stitching.

Zimbabwe has reportedly requested diplomatic immunity for the country's First Lady, which would mean she would not be prosecuted for the alleged incident.

It follows a chaotic week where Mrs Mugabe's clandestine efforts to avoid capture made a mockery of the SA justice system, and she was eventually bundled back to Zimbabwe.

The rumours that Ms Mugabe is about to be let off the hook have caused uproar among South Africans, who have become exhausted of seeing politically connected people escape justice because of whom they know.

Harare has made no official comment and requests for comment from Zimbabwean government officials have gone unanswered. She is in the middle of an assault case involving a 20-year-old model, Gabriella Engels.

Some demonstrators protested in Pretoria on Saturday against Zimbabwe's president and his wife, saying she should be prosecuted. "If she wasn't here on official business, that rules out the possibility of diplomatic immunity", Louw said.

"Arrest Grace, please. Grace is a disgrace", some chanted.

But she told police after the alleged assault that she was scheduled to attend the summit with her husband.
