Trump teases 'decision' on U.S. strategy for Afghanistan

The address will be Trump's third primetime address to the American people as president. He also spent two nights at his home at Trump Tower, his first visit to the NY skyscraper since taking office.

On July 14, US Defense Secretary James Mattis said the Pentagon was close to completing its policy review for a new strategy in Afghanistan. He will be stopping by a Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma at 1 p.m. followed by a rally in Phoenix at the Phoenix Convention Center at 7 p.m. He stops in Reno, Nev., on Wednesday to address the American Legion convention.

Reuters reported that under one proposal outlined by usa officials, the United States would begin a review of whether to designate Pakistan a state sponsor of terrorism unless it pursues senior leaders of the Afghan Taliban and the allied Haqqani network, considered the most lethal Afghan extremist group. Right now, the official said, they can only do so for one.

"I assure you we are with you in this fight".

"We are losing in Afghanistan, and time is of the essence if we intend to turn the tide", McCain said.

U.S. President Donald Trump in a top meeting with his national security team on Friday postponed taking decision about the 16-year-old war in Afghanistan.

US commanders have said extra troops could be used to help train and advise Afghan units to make them a more effective fighting force in hopes of breaking what the USA commander in Afghanistan, Gen. John Nicholson, has termed a "stalemate".

The U.S. and its allies ousted the Taliban from power shortly thereafter and a new government was elected in 2004, but stubborn pockets of al-Qaida and Taliban forces have remained, and in recent years the ISIS terrorist network has been active in the country as well. Mr Trump, like the wider American public, has expressed his fatigue over the longest foreign war in American history and the inability of two presidents before him to achieve a decisive win against the Taliban.

The high-level meeting was held at Camp David to discuss the Afghanistan war strategy with his high-level aides, but the meeting reached nothing.

The Trump administration began a review of USA policy on Afghanistan soon after Trump took office in January.

He said the deliberations, including talks at the Camp David presidential retreat on Friday, were done properly.

"I am very comfortable that the strategic process was sufficiently rigorous and did not go in with a pre-set position", Mattis said, according to Reuters.

In a sign of Trump's frustration, the president reportedly told Mattis and General Joe Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, they should replace General John Nicholson, who heads up USA and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces in Afghanistan.

Mattis says the new strategy is worth the wait.

Such a designation would trigger harsh US sanctions, including a ban on arms sales and an end to USA economic assistance for Pakistan.

Mattis said Trump had been presented with multiple options. He did not name them, but others have said one option was to pull out of Afghanistan entirely. Another, which Mattis had mentioned recently in Washington, was to hire private contractors to perform some of the US military's duties.

A lot of the attention initially focused on whether the Trump administration would add more USA troops.

The U.S. has faced setbacks in Afghanistan as a resurgent Taliban continues to strike against coalition forces.
