Oxford University employee charged with Chicago murder

Oxford University employee charged with Chicago murder

He and 43-year-old Wyndham Lathem, a former Northwestern University professor, face charges of first-degree murder for the death last month of Trenton James Cornell-Duranleau, a MI native who had been working in Chicago.

Latham, who police say was staying in a hotel close to his apartment building, had picked up Warren at Chicago's O'Hare airport several days before the alleged crime took place.

Lathem continued to stab the man, while Warren went to get more knives, prosecutors said.

An autopsy found Cornell-Duranleau died of multiple sharp force injuries, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office, and his death was ruled a homicide.

The video raised concern among investigators that Lathem might kill attempt Cornell-Duranleau and Lathem were friends on Facebook, although it's not clear when and how the two had first crossed paths.

Lathem and Warren both appeared in court in California last week, where they agreed to return to IL to face charges.

Around 5 a.m. on July 26, witnesses heard fighting and screaming coming from Lathem's apartment, Deenihan said.

Prosecutors said Lathem then left the bathroom, entering the bedroom to repeatedly stab Cornell-Duranleau, who woke up and "began to scream and fight back". Lathem had given Warren a cellphone and told him to record the murder, prosecutors said. Authorities say the attack was so violent the blade of the knife they believe was used was broken. He had been been stabbed 47 times in his back, chest, shoulder and abdomen.

The two suspects fled on a cross-country odyssey and surrendered to authorities in California on August 4. One of the men made a $1,000 donation to a local library in Cornell-Duranleau's name. Wine said Lathem intends to plead not guilty to the charges.

"What I can tell you is it was not domestic in nature like a husband, wife, or boyfriend, boyfriend, or a love triangle; that was not the motive", Deenihan said. "It was a little more dark and disturbing, as far as I'm concerned".

Authorities have said the attack on Cornell-Duranleau, a MI native who had moved from the Grand Rapids area to work in Chicago, was so brutal that the blade of the knife investigators believe was used to stab him was broken.

According to his obituary, Cornell-Duranleau was raised in Corunna, west of Flint. The video raised concern among investigators that Lathem might kill himself.

On July 26, one day before the killing, Lathem booked a room for Warren near the condo, Toller said.

Lathem had described the killing as the biggest mistake of his life, according to Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.

Upon arrival, authorities said detectives interrogated the men, who were then formally charged with first-degree murder.
