US National Security Adviser Says 'No War with N.Korea Imminent'

US National Security Adviser Says 'No War with N.Korea Imminent'

However, he said he wouldn't be surprised if Pyongyang conducted another missile test.

That was the second missile alleged to be an ICBM to be tested by the regime of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, after on July 4, it carried out a ballistic missile test, and claimed that the rocket was the much coveted intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

Speaking on the Fox News Sunday program on August 13, CIA Director Mike Pompeo said that "there's nothing imminent today" but that it was important to make clear to North Korea that USA patience has worn out.

Trump tweeted Friday that the military is "locked and loaded" and that North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un would "truly regret it" if he attacks the USA territory of Guam.

CIA Director Mike Pompeo (pahm-PAY'-oh) says there's "nothing imminent today".

Regarding Trump's strong rhetoric against the North, the security adviser explained that the president made it clear how the USA will respond to North Korea's provocations.

The top USA military officer, Marine Corps Gen. Joseph Dunford, is traveling in Asia and expected to meet with leaders in South Korea, Japan and China.

Dunford told reporters he is aiming to "sense what the temperature is in the region" and will discuss military options in the event the "diplomatic and economic pressurization campaign" fails.

He said that it is time for all nations, including China and Russian Federation, as well as Japan and South Korea, to work together toward a common goal of denuclearizing the Korean peninsula. "I can't share with you about the information we have about what's going on in North Korea".

"We're all looking to get out of this situation without a war."

Guam, some 4,350 miles from the U.S. mainland, is a target because it is home to U.S. Naval and Air Force bases, from which two B-1B supersonic bombers were deployed close to the Korean peninsula on Tuesday.

The White House said in a statement that Trump and Xi "agreed North Korea must stop its provocative and escalatory behavior".

The US and North Korea have recently been engaged in a war of words with Pyongyang describing Trump's "fire and fury" threat if an American territory is targeted or attacked by Pyongyang as a "load of nonsense".

The North then came out with a threat to lob four intermediate-range "Hwasong-12" missiles near Guam, a tiny US territory some 2,000 miles (3,200 kilometers) from the North's capital, Pyongyang.

Pompeo declined to say how long it will be before North Korea could carry out such a nuclear attack on the US mainland.

North Korea's Minju Joson newspaper said in an editorial Saturday that the North's army is "capable of fighting any war the US wants".

"I don't think military action is imminent, but we're on a collision course with North Korea", Graham said on "Fox News Sunday".
