War in Yemen causing starvation, cholera — United Nations aid chief

War in Yemen causing starvation, cholera — United Nations aid chief

A Saudi Arabia-led military coalition was responsible for an "unacceptably high" 51 percent of child deaths and injuries in Yemen past year, according to a draft United Nations report seen by Reuters on Thursday.

In March 2015, a Saudi-led coalition began a campaign in support of Hadi's government and against Houthi forces allied with ousted President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

"Attacks carried out by air caused over half of all child casualties, with at least 349 killed and 333 injured", the draft report found.

Saudi-led coalition's airstrike hits Yemeni Capital, Sana'a in 2015.

Yemen's almost 30-month-old civil war pits President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi's Saudi-backed government, which controls south and eastern Yemen, against the Houthis, who control the more populated north and eastern parts of the country. Despite the successful interception, the launching of this missile, which made it 43 miles south of Mecca, illustrates the extent to which Saudi Arabia and its regional allies have failed to achieve a key objective in their war in Yemen: to deprive the Houthi militants of the means to threaten Saudi national security with heavy weaponry and missiles sourced domestically and overseas.

Saudi Arabia's United Nations mission said in a statement on Wednesday that there was "no justification whatsoever" for including the coalition's name on the blacklist.

There is no sign of improvement in the conflict, with number of air strikes per month now three times higher than a year ago and monthly reports of armed clashes up 50 per cent, he said.

"Now we know there is draft with the Saudis' name on it. Let's hope that when the list finally becomes public in a few weeks they'll stay there", Akshaya Kumar, deputy United Nations director at Human Rights Watch, told Al Jazeera.

Ould Cheikh Ahmed told the Security Council on Friday he is working to get a deal to secure the flow of aid, payment of salaries to civil servants and prevention of arms smuggling. "However, despite these measures, grave violations against children continued at unacceptably high levels in 2016".

United Nations deputy spokesman Farhan Haq told reporters on Thursday that Secretary-General Antonio Guterres hasn't seen the draft report that was leaked.
