Kenya holds a fair election at a trying time

Kenya holds a fair election at a trying time

He went further to note that Nasa will produce evidence of rigging in the August 8, 2017 polls in which the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced President Kenyatta the victor.

The European Union's election observer mission in Kenya is calling on the government to promptly publish all results forms of the disputed August 8 vote.

Odinga's Coalition has rejected the results, claiming massive fraud, and said it will not go to court to challenge them.

Kenya's opposition says it will challenge the results of last week's presidential election in Supreme Court and wage a campaign of "civil disobedience".

The electoral commission announced on August 11 that incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta had won the election with 54.3 percent of the vote, beating Odinga's 44.8 percent. NASA questioned the results of the election, claiming that the voting system had been hacked.

Odinga hasn't called for protests yet, but has said he will announce his strategy on Tuesday.

Speaking at the weekend, Odinga promised to advise supporters Tuesday of "the next course of action" but his eagerly awaited appearance failed to transpire. Kenya police claim that 10 people have been killed and said almost all were committing crimes. "We shall hold vigils, moments of silence, beat drums and do everything else to peacefully draw attention to the gross electoral injustices ... and demand redress", he said. "This is just the beginning, we will not accept and move on".

Opposition leader asks people to boycott work and stay indoors until he announces new strategy after losing elections.

After Kenyatta was declared the victor on Friday (Aug. 11), protests engulfed opposition strongholds in Nairobi and Kisumu in western Kenya.

In a letter, the ministry said it would give the two groups 90 days to resolve "any outstanding noncompliance issues", without specifying what those issues were.

Zeid is also expressing concern that Kenya's oversight body for non-governmental organizations has called for the African Centre for Open Governance to be shut down and its directors arrested. Even in Kibera, the sprawling slum where much of last week's violence occurred, Odinga supporters said they were ready to move on. He also ran in the 2007 polls against former president Mwai Kibaki but went on to serve as prime minister following the unity government that was created following the disputed poll.
