"Dread" in Philippines: police abat 32 suspected traffickers

Out of the 66 anti-drug operations in Bulacan province, police engaged in 20 armed encounters killed 32 people - the highest death toll in a day since Duterte launched his administration's brutal war against drugs.

President Duterte has praised the provincial police force that gunned down 32 drug suspects on Monday, while also threatening to shoot human rights advocates.

The campaign, aimed at wiping out the drug trade, has attracted intense global criticism over the number of deaths. He referred to the night of police action as a "one-time, big-time" operation, indicating that it was targeting "notorious drug pushers". "We should kill another 32 everyday, [then] maybe we can reduce what ails this country", Duterte said.

"Some quarters of the society are questioning why that many ended up dead, but all we can say is that we don't have any control of the situation", Caramat added. "If they are obstructing justice, you shoot them", Rappler quoted Mr. Duterte as saying in a speech at an event held by the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption in MalacaƱang on Wednesday.

Having continued for one year and been marked by heavy state violence, Duterte's "war on drugs" has been heavily criticized by various global organizations which allege that the President has severely violated human rights.

Police said it seized more than 230 grams of suspected crystal meth or shabu, 765 grams of marijuana leaves, grenades, firearms and ammunition from the suspects.

He has again promised to grant pardon to the police officers who would be convicted of murder in his war against drugs. He said fish in Manila Bay would grow fat from the bodies of drugs suspects.

Duterte said past year he would be "happy to slaughter" 3 million addicts.

Duterte won the presidency of his country largely on a promise to eradicate drug crime by any means necessary and has repeatedly threatened to kill drug offenders, alarming human rights activists around the globe. Duterte suspended the campaign in January promising to "clean up" the police, and re-organise the anti-drug units.

"And little did I realize that the very agency that I was relying on to protect us from the smuggling of drugs from overseas, was the one importing the drugs".
