Trump moves to crack down on China trade practices

Trump moves to crack down on China trade practices

Beijing issued the order on Monday.

In the afternoon, Trump is expected to sign a memorandum directing US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to determine whether Chinese policies hurt American investors or companies - with retaliatory US trade measures a possible outcome.

"By trying to incriminate Beijing as an accomplice in [North Korea's] nuclear adventure and blame it for a failure that is essentially a failure of all stakeholders, Trump risks making the serious mistake of splitting up the global coalition that is the means to resolve the issue peacefully", the China Daily said in its editorial comment.

Given the recent tensions on the Korean peninsula, which followed North Korea's two intercontinental ballistic missile tests last month, the U.S. has tried to leverage on the trade probe to put pressure on Beijing to rein in Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programmes.

An administration official has insisted diplomacy over North Korea and the potential trade probe were "totally unrelated", saying the trade action was not a pressure tactic. "There will be no victor", she added, noting that all World Trade Organization members must respect its rules.

"We will safeguard the copyrights, patents, trademarks, trade secrets and other intellectual property that is so vital to our security and to our prosperity", Trump said.

"We will ask the Chinese suppliers who work with us if they plan on being open with their client - sometimes the final buyer won't realise their clothes are being made in North Korea".

Since launching his successful run for the White House and then taking office, Trump has frequently accused China of undermining the United States economy.

President Trump is getting tough on trade with China.

Last week, Washington announced preliminary sanctions against Chinese imports of aluminum foil.

Its flourishing textiles industry shows how impoverished North Korea has adapted, with a limited embrace of market reforms, to sanctions since 2006 when it first tested a nuclear device.

"I think China can do a lot more (about North Korea)".

China says it will stop importing North Korean coal, iron ore, fish and other goods in September as it implements United Nations sanctions.

U.S. administration officials however have denied any link between the latest trade action and Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions.

Democrats recently have supported Trump on some trade issues.

This includes in particular concerns over Beijing's requirement that foreign companies establish local joint ventures.
