2nd man arrested in officer's shooting death

2nd man arrested in officer's shooting death

Investigators say Michael was killed when the driver of a auto he stopped for a traffic violation Sunday jumped out and shot him.

Officer Michael's Funeral is Saturday. Prosecutors say McCarthy jumped out of his vehicle and fired at the officer before driving a few blocks, crashing the auto and fleeing on foot.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Sergeant Bill Lowe says Officer Michael was able to return fire hitting McCarthy.

However, William Noble, 35, is now charged with tampering with evidence in the investigation.

Ian McCarthy, the man with a long criminal history in New Hampshire who is accused of shooting to death a Clinton, Mo., police officer, will plead innocent to the charges today, according to his public defender.

The officer says: "I asked him why he was fake crying and he said he had sold the firearm to McCarthy".

An active warrant was also issued for his arrest in 2011 on charges of being a felon in possession of a risky weapon, reckless conduct and disorderly conduct.

In 2001, McCarthy was convicted for stabbing a minor in Manchester.

Lowe says the relationship between McCarthy and Noble is unclear.

The Henry County prosecutor says that Noble knew the rifle was used in a crime and attempted to hide it.

Police say Noble asked what type of weapon was used in the murder of Michael. During an exchange of gunfire, both Michael and McCarthy were shot. He said he panicked, told his wife he was taking the trash out, and drove north out of town with the gun. He faces up to four years in prison.

McCarthy's landlord, Ed Hannah, told The Kansas City Star that McCarthy lived on $2,000 a month from a trust fund set up by his grandfather, who is deceased.

"He's an odd duck", Hannah said. Hannah said McCarthy skipped some job interviews and apparently had never been employed. One neighbor, Whitney Julian, said McCarthy had a temper, once "going berserk" when heavy machinery woke him up - at about 10 a.m.
