Cardiovascular Death Risk Significantly Higher with Marijuana Use

Cardiovascular Death Risk Significantly Higher with Marijuana Use

Compared to nonusers, marijuana users had a 3.42 times higher risk of death from hypertension and a 1.04 greater risk for each year of use.

The only qualification to meet this definition was if NHANES respondents answered "yes" when asked if they had ever used marijuana.

A study has shown that the risk of death from hypertension (also known as high blood pressure) is higher for cannabis users than for non-users - and is even higher than for those who smoke cigarettes. Corresponding mortality data were collected from the National Center for Health Statistics and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The study from School of Public Health of Georgia State University was published Wednesday in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology.

Initially, Yankey and her colleagues found no difference in the unadjusted risk of hypertension-related death for either cigarette smokers or marijuana users.

"It could be these elevations in blood pressure are a manifestation of marijuana being laced with other things that are more cardio-stimulating", Lawrence said. The researchers said that the cardiovascular risk associated with marijuana use may be greater than the cardiovascular risk already established for cigarette smoking.

A new study has found that smoking marijuana could have a surprising health risk. Eleven and a half years was the average duration of marijuana use. The researchers acknowledged "the number of smokers in our study was small and this needs to be examined in a larger study". "You would think that the marijuana if it was working on the vascular system to cause some damage, it should cause stroke, it should cause heart disease; it shouldn't [only] cause hypertension", he commented.

'Support for liberal marijuana use is partly due to claims that it is beneficial and possibly not harmful to health, ' Yankey continued.

Previous research has also shown that marijuana does increase the risk of stress-induced cardiomyopathy, lending weight to the growing evidence of the extended use of the drug and increased risk of cardiac injury-albeit more research is essential. "Based upon the findings of prior studies, the authors' interpretation with regard to the degree of this risk potential appears to be sensational, and the methods used in this particular study appear to be highly questionable".
