Hackers leak more Game of Thrones spoilers

The network has had a rough few weeks, as not only did news come to light that hackers had breached HBO's system but also, in an unrelated leak, Sunday's episode of Game of Thrones appeared online early.

According to editors at Wired magazine, the ransom note featured in a video containing scrolling text, set to a GoT score, which was addressed to HBO chief executive officer Richard Plepler.

The fallout of the HBO hack continued on Tuesday as the hackers involved have reportedly released personal phone numbers and even email addresses of multiple Game of Thrones cast members, including Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen), Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister), and Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister).

Submit your Newswire tips here. Specifically, the hackers said HBO should consider the ransom "another budget for [its] advertisements". "Leakage will be your worst nightmare", the note reads.

So far the HBO leaks, which have also included episodes of Larry David's "Curb Your Enthusiasm", have been limited, falling well short of the chaos inflicted on Sony in 2014.

Despite this, the network has reiterated that it doesn't believe that its email system as a whole has been compromised.

The latest leak includes another half-gigabyte of the total 1.5TB of digital material that hackers stole from HBO.

The group has claimed they are earning US$12m to US$15m a year from breaching data of organisations.

The network added, "We continue to work around the clock with outside cybersecurity firms and law enforcement to resolve the incident".

Renaming a single file may seem like a smaller detail in the grander scheme of things, but it does raise some important questions about the trustworthiness of the hackers, and the way the media should engage with them. "It's a game for us".

Despite their demands, the hackers insist it's all a game, and that "money isn't our main objective". We don't want to endanger HBO's situation nor cause it to lose its reputation.

The letter said HBO was the 17th target for the hacking group and that "only 3 of our past targets refused to pay and were punished very badly and 2 of them collapsed entirely".
