Two mosquito pools in Ridgetown test positive for West Nile

Two mosquito pools in Ridgetown test positive for West Nile

This is the first time the Hamilton County Health Department has found West Nile virus this year, spokesman Mike Samet said, though it's been around OH since at least 2001.

West Nile Virus typically causes mild to severe flu-like symptoms and in extreme cases can be fatal, particularly with the elderly whose immune systems are compromised. The Vector Control District plans to collect adult mosquitoes with traps in the area where the crow was discovered.

So far this year cases have been reported in Covington, Forrest (3), Grenada, Hinds (5), Humphreys, Jones, Leflore, Lincoln, Madison, Perry, Rankin (2), and Scott counties. With a "good deal" of summer remaining, people such take the proper precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Mosquitoes acquire the virus by feeding on infected birds. The virus' symptoms can appear 13 to 14 days after an infection.

There have already been two human cases of the virus in IL this year.

The species of mosquito carrying the West Nile Virus can be found in a variety of places such as old tires, stagnant pools of ground water, artificial containers and catch basins.

The Health Department urges people to report dead birds, but not to touch them.

Use air conditioning: Make sure doors and windows are screened - and those screens are intact. "Initial symptoms in those who become ill include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, and tiredness".

The majority of people infected with West Nile virus do not get sick.
