Japan marks 72nd anniversary of U.S. nuke attack

Japan marks 72nd anniversary of U.S. nuke attack

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, however, avoided any controversy saying, "For us to truly realize a 'world without nuclear weapons, ' the participation of both nuclear weapon states and non-nuclear weapon states is necessary". Japan is the only country to have suffered atomic attacks, in 1945. "I also pray for the peace of the A-bomb victims and the bereaved families, those attending here as well as the citizens of Hiroshima city".

On Sunday, Japan marked 72 years since the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, destroying a portion of the city and its inhabitants, and heralding the end of World War II.

On the 6 August 1945, 140,000 people were killed after the United States dropped an atomic bomb in the Japanese city of Hiroshima.

He said Tokyo hoped to push for a world without nuclear weapons in a way that was acceptable to all countries.

The anniversary comes amid growing concern in Japan over North Korea's recent missile tests, and mounting tension over its nuclear programme. The memorial ceremony took place in the Peace Park in central Hiroshima.

Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui urged that the "absolute evil" of atomic weaponry be banished. You could find yourself suffering their cruelty.

However, in June, Japan had supported the United Kingdom, France and the U.S. in dismissing a United Nations treaty banning atomic weapons.

In his message to Hiroshima, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the presence of some 15,000 nuclear weapons, along with "dangerous rhetoric regarding their use", has exacerbated the threat they pose.

Graphically depicting the horror of atom bomb, along with NSS volunteers of SNDT University and University of Mumbai, school students, social activists and peace-loving citizens in the city marched for peace and a nuclear-free world.

August 6 is observed as Hiroshima Day, while August 9 as Nagasaki Day.

Mr Barack Obama became the first sitting United States president to visit Hiroshima in May a year ago, paying a moving tribute to the victims of the devastating bombing.
