Anti-Immigrant Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio Convicted of Criminal Contempt of Court

Anti-Immigrant Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio Convicted of Criminal Contempt of Court

The 85-year-old Arpaio now faces up to six months in jail.

Arpaio will be sentenced on October 5 at 10 a.m. His attorneys said in a written statement the 2011 order was not clear.

"Today, Judge Susan Bolton violated the United States Constitution by issuing her verdict without even reading it to the Defendant in public court", Jack Wilenchik, Arpaio's attorney, said in a statement.

"Arpaio and his deputies have admitted to violating the judge's order, but they claim their defiance wasn't intentional".

While many are celebrating Arpaio's conviction, federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies remain entangled with federal immigration enforcement efforts through such laws as Arizona's "show me your papers" act, SB 1070, the "poli-migra" program 287 (g) and the recently-restarted Secure Communities program.

Snow didn't buy this explanation - instead arguing that Arpaio defied the law because he thought it'd give him a better shot at winning his 2012 re-election bid, according to NPR. But critics said his policy of detaining people on mere suspicion was racist and illegal, and his refusal to honor a court's order to stop was brazen.

Former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio was found guilty of criminal contempt Monday. Arpaio and his attorneys repeatedly petitioned for a jury, only to be denied by Judge Bolton in March and again in May.

He "willfully violated the order by failing to do anything to ensure his subordinates' compliance and by directing them to continue to detain persons for whom no criminal charges could be filed", Bolton said in her decision. In short, with just a few exceptions like the honest and fair minded liberal Judge Ronald Gould of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, they are by and large modern day political hacks who were put there to do a job on conservatives, libertarians, people of faith, and others who truly believe in the vision of our Founding Fathers.

Some supporters of stricter immigration enforcement rallied behind Mr. Arpaio.

The former sheriff served as the top lawman for Maricopa County for more than two decades.

In December 2011, amid a long-running racial profiling case, U.S. District Court Judge G. Murray Snow ordered Arpaio's deputies to stop holding individuals exclusively on the belief they were in the country illegally. His work to eradicate the Latino population of his Phoenix county earned him a 22-page report from the Department of Justice in 2011 outlining the explicit racial profiling and "unconstitutional policing" found in his office.
