Violence as opposition boycotts Venezuelan election

Violence as opposition boycotts Venezuelan election

Maduro has previously said that his plan for a national assembly would "modify" the "rotten National Assembly that's now there", and the elected constituents would represent all sectors of Venezuelan society.

But Maduro has insisted that the "card that will win this game" is the election of the new assembly.

Today, through a secret, direct and global vote, the Venezuelan population elect 537 parliamentarians and the remaining eight members of the assembly will be voted on August 1st amid the indigenous communities of Venezuela.

Maduro, who took over from charismatic President Chavez in 2013, maintains that resurrecting the constituent assembly - a group of 181 people directly chosen by the government, plus 364 directly-elected - is the best way to safeguard "the peace of the country".

The bodies of two men shot dead, aged 28 and 39, were found after a protest Sunday in the western state of Merida, where a 38-year-old man was killed on Saturday in another demonstration.

In the west of Caracas, national guard troops fanning out to put down any disruption to the election used armoured vehicles and fired shots to disperse protesters blocking roads.

The tragic death comes as dozens of Venezuelans gather early at voting centres in Caracas, saying they plan to cast ballots because they hope their lives will improve.

Turnout will be a key factor to give the vote a facade of legitimacy.

It has appealed for a boycott of the election, which surveys suggest is rejected by more than 70 percent of Venezuelans.

Fear of the violence worsening has rippled across the region, and beyond.

The US, the European Union and Latin American powers - including Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico - have come out against the vote, saying it would destroy Venezuelan democracy.

Air France and Iberia both announced they were suspending their flights to the country during the weekend vote.

He also called for the "unconditional release of all political prisoners in Venezuela, free and fair elections, restoration of the National Assembly, and respect for human rights in Venezuela", a statement from his office said.

"We're going to keep fighting", said opposition legislator Jorge Millan.

The 545-member citizens' assembly will be tasked with rewriting the constitution and be empowered to dissolve the opposition-controlled Congress. "But it's only aggravating them".

Neighboring Colombia - a refuge for tens of thousands of Venezuelans fleeing the chaos at home - has said it would not recognize the results of Sunday's election in Venezuela.

Maduro said that this election is a demonstration of a civic and democratic exercise surrounded by a violent campaign staged by the opposition and the United States.

Maduro has the military behind him. Two diplomats resigned this week in dissent: one at the United Nations and another at the embassy in Panama.

On Friday, US Vice President Mike Pence spoke by telephone to a detained prominent Venezuelan opposition leader, Leopoldo Lopez, who early this month was moved from prison to house arrest.
