Iran Launched Rocket Carrying Satellite, Official Says

Iran Launched Rocket Carrying Satellite, Official Says

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Thursday that reports that Iran had launched a rocket carrying a satellite into space violated U.N. Security Council resolution 2231, which calls on Iran not to conduct any activity involving ballistic missiles that are created to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons.

Despite the deal limiting Iran's nuclear activity, the US has continued to punish Tehran for developing ballistic missile technology.

The Trump administration has criticized Iran's ballistic missile launches. Whether the launch was a suborbital test of one or both of the Simorgh's stages, and what payload, if any, the rocket might have been carrying, awaits confirmation.

China's ambassador to the UN, Liu Jieyi, who has veto powers on the UN Security Council, appeared to back Iran in its dispute with the United States on July 27, telling AP that the latest rocket launch was not "within the scope" of the nuclear agreement.

Iranian news outlets reported about the successful launch of a satellite-carrying rocket into space.

Mr Kripowicz said Iran's satellites technology "could be configured to be an ICBM". "The Simorgh can place a satellite weighing up to 250 kg (550 pounds) in an orbit of 500 km (311 miles)".

Simorgh is larger than an earlier model known as Safir (ambassador) that Iran has used to launch satellites.

Iran had sent in February 2015, a small observation satellite built locally, called Fajr (Dawn ed), a weight of 52 kilogram, the first since 2012, that had been placed "successfully" in orbit 450 kilometers above earth, according to the iranian media.

As with its nuclear program, Iran claims its satellite program is for entirely peaceful purposes, despite being managed by the Iranian defense ministry.

The US criticised the launch and described it as a provocative action. The New York Times reports this launch was in response to that vote.
