India off to steady start in first Test

India off to steady start in first Test

Sri Lanka's Asela Gunaratne is in doubt for the rest of the three-match Test series against India after injuring his thumb on the first morning of the first Test in Galle.

Though conventional wisdom would suggest that the victor of the toss must bat first, Sri Lanka might be better off bowling.

"We have spoken enough about these issues and it is something that we are not focusing on at all now", Kohli said. Kohli has matured into an astute captain, Sri Lanka on the other hand, have slipped drastically in the Test arena. He has been subsequently ruled out of the remainder of the Test series and the hosts will be playing this game with just 10 players.

Sri Lanka is coping with transition and, to make it worse, its recent skipper Angelo Mathews relinquished the position and his replacement in the hot seat Dinesh Chandimal, recovering from pneumonia, will miss this Test.

"It's pretty different sitting here two years after that particular series", Kohli said of that 2015 series.

The Indians got an early jolt when Dhawan's opening partner Abhinav Mukund edged Nuwan Pradeep behind to wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella.

India captain Virat Kohli hinted Tuesday that Hardik Pandya may get his maiden Test cap Wednesday against Sri Lanka as he chose to underline the all-rounder's wicket-taking ability on all kind of tracks. They also have a really good fast bowling unit, with Kohli spoilt for choice in picking two out of Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami. Whether with bat or ball - and a lightly grassed, well-rolled surface promises much batting pleasure - Sri Lanka will have to stay in the hunt at all times. "Even we have a game plan for each and every single Indian player", he said.

Rangana Herath has been so good that Sri Lanka have only rarely felt the vaccum that was created after legendary spinner Muttiah Muralitharan's departure. They will back themselves in subcontinental conditions that suit their style of play.

India will be missing KL Rahul, who is down with viral fever.

"We are just looking forward to the cricket now and in this series to showcase our skills and have consistent performances, which we have had as a side ever since we started our climb back in the rankings". But at the same time, we'll have to look at different abilities of both teams.

Despite his great showing in the Champions Trophy, he was dropped from the original Test squad as the selectors retained Abhinav Mukund as the back-up opener to KL Rahul and Murali Vjiay. Though, his image of the most destructive batsmen in limited overs cricket has been established, Yuvraj has not been able to replicate same in the Test format.
