Trump may support Russian Federation sanctions legislation

The draft measures are created to give U.S. President Donald Trump discretion to impose sanctions on any company (including European) that contributes to the development or operation of energy export pipelines in the Russian Federation or to Europe, or engages in oil ventures with Russian companies. "Unilateral measures would undermine this", the Commission said.

If an agreement couldn't be reached, possible damaging consequences might affect Europe's transport, mining, and finance sectors, not to mention the energy companies, including those working on realizing the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project between Germany and Russian Federation.

"We are concerned the measures discussed in the U.S. Congress could have unintended consequences, not only when it comes to Transatlantic/G7 unity, but also on European Union economic and energy security interests".

The European Union sounded the alarm on Saturday (22 July) about moves in the US Congress to step up sanctions on Russian Federation, urging Washington to keep coordinating with its G7 partners and warning of unintended consequences.

Kushner, who was quizzed on Monday by Senate investigators on his contacts with Russians as part of an investigation into possible Kremlin meddling in last year's presidential election, said he had met Sergei Gorkov, the head of Russian state-owned Vnesheconombank, on December 13.

"We understand that the Russia/Iran sanctions bill is driven primarily by domestic considerations", the statement said.

Initially, US President Donald Trump resisted the legislation, which would prevent him from unilaterally easing penalties against Moscow in the future - effectively placing him under Congress's watch. He said Brussels must be ready to act swiftly in case the United States takes measures ignoring the European Union's concerns.

The note, dated July 19, said, "The measures risk breaking the transatlantic and G7 unity" on handling Russia's occupation of Crimea, Ukraine.

"We are working with European partners on the implementation of a number of big projects", he said, without naming Nord Stream II.

It would also sharply limit U.S. President Donald Trump's ability to lift any sanctions against Russian Federation.

Germany has already said it could retaliate if the United States moves to sanction firms involved with building a new Baltic pipeline for Russian gas. The official said the administration "supports the direction the bill is headed, but won't weigh in conclusively until there is a final piece of legislation and no more changes are being made".
