Netanyahu in talks with Jordanian king to end Temple Mount crisis

Netanyahu in talks with Jordanian king to end Temple Mount crisis

And the Waqf stayed away (and urged other Muslims to do the same).

The Wakf ordered Muslims not to comply with the new measures, warning yet again that the al-Aksa Mosque is endangered.

This shift has stoked Muslim fears of a purported Israeli plan to expand Jewish control there. Jordan's stance is that anything installed at the site must be approved by the Waqf, or Muslim administration, and can not change the status quo, said the official.

The Red Crescent said among the 50 wounded Palestinians, 15 of them were hit by rubber bullets.

Netanyahu spoke to Israeli security chiefs by phone on Wednesday.

"In the Old City, evening Muslim prayers took place, many local residents prayed in areas outside the Temple Mount", Israel Police reported Tuesday evening.

Waqf guards are posted inside the gates and have the right to turn any visitors away.

When it was reopened on Sunday, metal detectors had been installed, to the anger of Muslim religious authorities. "Magnetometers are vital for security". The city's police said it was a necessary requirement for the site to open.

It appears that the group of young Jewish visitors persuaded a young boy who was with them to act as if he was praying between the mosques, which violates the visitation guidelines, while they stood around him and took pictures.

The bill aims to mend Israel's Basic Law on Jerusalem to necessitate the approval of 80 of the 120 Knesset members to make any changes to the law, instead of the regular majority vote. He also warned of a "deterioration of the security situation" if the measures continue.

On Tuesday night, worshipers were joined by several Israeli-Arab lawmakers from the Joint Arab List.

Immediately after the incident, Israel shut down the compound, saying that security forces need to check the site for more militants or ammunition. On Monday, clashes errupted between worshippers and police outside the compound.

The Arab League, an umbrella group of Arab countries, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation have issued separate statements calling on Israel to lift the security measures.

He also spoke by phone with Jordan's King Abdullah II on Saturday night before leaving on a trip to France and Hungary.

Israel blames Palestinian leaders for incitement to violence while the Palestinians charge Israel's military occupation and attempts to change the delicate status quo at the contested holy site as the factors behind the violent attacks. Netanyahu said Jordan wants to "end this as quietly as possible".
