Donald Trump more popular than Hillary Clinton

While President Donald Trump's approval rating continues to lag, many of his supporters in the Republican base remain by his side.

Figures showed that the last United States president as unpopular at the same mark was Gerald Ford, with a 39 per cent of approval rating in February, 1975.

Just 28 per cent of those polled said they think Trump is making significant progress toward his goals, while 55 per cent think otherwise.

Trump's overall approval rating was down from 42 percent in April.

In an early morning tweet, Trump used some of his toughest language against a favored target, the press, saying: "With all of its phony unnamed sources & highly slanted & even fraudulent reporting, #Fake News is DISTORTING DEMOCRACY in our country!"

The areas were broken down into "surge" or "flip" counties, meaning they either flipped from Barack Obama to Trump or Trump beat Mitt Romney's totals in 2012.

The problem for Trump is that many key responsibilities of a president - maintaining good relations with Congress, reassuring the public in times of crisis, appearing steady and trustworthy while negotiating with foreign governments - are completely undermined when he tweets whatever random thought pops into his head. A strong majority of registered voters - 56 percent - say Trump's behavior isn't just unpresidential but is "damaging to the presidency".

The fresh survey indicates that almost half of all people in the United States (48 percent) see the country's leadership in the world as weaker since Trump was inaugurated in January, compared with 27 percent who say it is stronger.

The U.S. Secret Service on Sunday denied a suggestion from President Donald Trump's personal lawyer that it had vetted a meeting between the president's son and Russian nationals during the 2016 campaign.

Donald Trump has the lowest ever six-month approval ratings for a US President, according to a new poll. A total of 63 percent of respondents said the meeting was inappropriate, while just 26 percent said it was appropriate.

On the domestic policy front, 50 percent said they preferred the existing health care system, known as Obamacare, and only 24 percent preferred the Republican bill proposed by Trump as a replacement. Even among Republicans, well fewer than half, 41 percent, say they're refreshing. But its role in vetting people who meet with a USA president or candidates is limited to ensuring physical safety.

The NBC/WSJ poll surveyed 600 adults from July 8-12 in those 439 counties and has a margin of error of plus-minus 4.0 percentage points.
