First picture of Al Pacino as Joe Paterno revealed

First picture of Al Pacino as Joe Paterno revealed

The untitled project is now in production.

Al Pacino, left, will play Joe Paterno in an HBO movie about the former Penn State football coach.

Here's the side-by-side. Pretty close, right? Paterno was sacked shortly after Sandusky's arrest in 2011 and died two months later.

Levinson is directing and executive producing through his Levinson/Fontana banner, with Jason Sosnoff and Tom Fontana also executive producing. The project is in association with Sony Pictures Television.

As of yet, no one has been announced to play Jerry Sandusky, but it's possible that he won't have that much of a role in this story. Check out the photo from the film, which is now in production, in the gallery below.

The HBO movie, directed by Barry Levinson, focuses on Paterno's fall from grace, "challenging his legacy and forcing him to face questions of institutional failure regarding the victims", according to a press release.

Academy Award victor Al Pacino is about to tackle one of his most controversial roles yet, portraying late college football legend Joe Paterno. The Oscar victor has starred in edgy films such as Scarface, Dog Day Afternoon, Cruising, and Angels in America.

Levinson and Pacino previously collaborated on HBO's 2010 Jack Kevorkian biopic You Don't Know Jack and 2014's The Humbling.
