Facebook Messenger adverts are going global

Facebook Messenger adverts are going global

Facebook has already completed its initial pilot program which happened in Australia and Thailand back in January of this year.

The next time you open Facebook Messenger to contact friends or family, you may find yourself scrolling through unwanted advertisements. This week Facebook announced they would be testing ads within Facebook Messenger and its 1.2 billion monthly active users.

The ad though will be subjected to the same policies that govern the selection of ads on Facebook and Instagram. Chudnovsky also admitted that the addition of home screen ads is part of their effort into making Messenger an advertising business model.

Facebook has made a decision to introduce advertisements on its Messenger platform too, the social networking company has announced in a blog post. On the other hand, Sponsored Messages will enable businesses to re-engage with people who have started a conversation with them.

Naturally, the social platform will be looking for more spaces on the app other than its home section, and this will lead to even bigger income generation for the company.

It will roll out ads in the home tab of the Messenger's mobile app. TechCrunch recently published an article heavily criticizing the way these ads are being implemented. The ads will appear in your inbox between chats. "I doubt people will be overwhelmed by ads in their message list", said eMarketer principal analyst Deborah Aho Williamson.

Another annoyance about these ads that was pointed out by TechCrunch was that they are irrelevant.

If you're bummed about this, it's worth remembering that Facebook does not charge a subscription or membership fee (yet). The businesses will also have the option to send paid messages to users.

Users can begin a conversation with the brand behind the advert.

"We'll start slow", Facebook's head of product for Messenger, Stan Chudnovsky, said at a conference in San Francisco this week.

Facebook has equipped its Messenger on June 28 with a new Discover Tab, with which you can search various businesses and engage with them using Messenger.
