WhatsApp, Google, Uber, Amazon preps to bring UPI-based payments

Earlier this year, The Ken reported that Facebook's Whatsapp was in the process of developing its own UPI payment system scheduled to be launched later this year. Such an integration is technologically possible but we are waiting for the RBI's approval. The company hasn't released any plans on this, but there will be a separate app with UPI integration for payments. According to a PTI report, Google is awaiting Reserve Bank of India's approval to launch its service in the country. NPCI has now requested the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to consider Google's application AP Hota, NPCI managing director said on Monday.

If you're an avid Uber user, keep a lookout for the official announcement by Uber, integrating UPI on their app. After all, Android is the dominant operating system in India.

Originally launched in 2015 in the US, Android Pay is a mobile wallet that can store credit cards, debit cards and loyalty cards etc.

An Uber spokesperson told the publication that the company will provide an option to use existing UPI IDs to pay for Uber rides. "As far as Whatsapp is concerned, discussions have commenced, it requires a series of discussions".

He also said that given the reach of these players, they will aid the government's target on digital payments, adding "However we don't have to be dependent on them". He also added that the debates are the preliminary stage for Facebook.

UPI, laucnhed by NPCI, is a mobile application that helps quick transfer of money through a mobile device round the clock. Besides that, Facebook announced peer-to-peer payments on its Messenger app back in 2015.

Facebook and WhatsApp are the large players....

Amazon is also planning to enter packaged food industry in India and has been looking at integrating UPI on its app and website. Technically it is feasible, but RBI would have to take a holistic look.

"As a technology-driven company, we applaud the potential and impact that fin-tech innovations like UPI can make. UPI is the future of Indian payments and we are proud to be a partner in this monumental mission of the government to facilitate a digital payments led society".

After demonetization previous year, online payment apps have witnessed a humungous amount of transactions which resulted in the rise of UPI platforms. The world's largest cross-platform instant messaging app, which has more than 200 million active users in India, is expected to launch its service later this year.
